Case Study: Vessel Speed Reduction (VSR) Program

Background

In 2006, the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles voluntarily created and approved the San Pedro Bay Ports Clean Air Action Plan (CAAP). This plan provides the overall strategy for dramatically reducing air pollution emissions from port-related cargo movement.

The Challenge

To achieve their CAAP goals, the ports needed a way to host and maintain a public website that collects air quality monitoring data from two sites within each Port. These ports also needed a way to automate the reporting of maximum vessel speeds for vessels transiting from 20 nm to the sea buoy.
